Project Associate (Access Audits - Built Environment)

Job Summary
The Project
Associate (Access Audits - Built Environment) will evaluate and assess
buildings, built environments, public spaces, and infrastructure to ensure
compliance with accessibility standards and universal design principles. The
role also involves business development, preparation of tender bids,
stakeholder engagement, and the ability to use architectural software for
planning, designing and reporting. The auditor should have expertise in
creating detailed reports, including Bills of Quantities (BoQ), and providing
actionable recommendations for inclusive design.
Key
Responsibilities
Auditing and
Assessment:
- Conduct detailed access audits of the built environment to evaluate compliance with national accessibility standards (e.g., Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, Harmonized Guidelines, National Building Code of India).
- Identify physical, sensory, and operational barriers that limit accessibility for persons with disabilities.
- Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare detailed audit reports outlining findings, gaps, and actionable recommendations.
- Document accessibility compliance status using tools, checklists, etc.
Compliance
Monitoring:
- Verify adherence to accessibility standards during the design, construction, and post-construction phases.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and planners to integrate accessibility considerations in designs.
Consultation and
Training:
- Provide technical advice to stakeholders, including developers, government bodies, and corporate clients, on accessibility improvements.
- Conduct training sessions and workshops on accessibility awareness and standards.
Business Development
and Tendering:
- Proactively seek work opportunities from government bodies, corporate clients, NGOs, and the private sector.
- Develop and respond to tender bids and proposals for accessibility services.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to foster partnerships and collaborations.
- Represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and events to promote accessibility.
Research and
Advocacy:
- Stay updated on advancements in accessibility laws, guidelines, and best practices.
- Advocate for inclusive design principles in urban planning and construction projects.
Qualifications
and Skills
Essential
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Business Development, or a related field.
- Certification in Accessibility (e.g., CPABE, CPACC, or equivalent) or preparing to gain one within 3 months of joining.
Experience:
- 3 Years of experience in accessibility auditing or architectural design roles.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, CorelDRAW, InDesign, PowerPoint, and other architectural/design tools for preparing layouts, drawings, and plans..
- Experience in preparing Bills of Quantities (BoQ) and cost estimates.
Technical
Skills:
- Strong understanding of accessibility standards and universal design principles and knowledge of inclusive design.
- Ability to create technical illustrations, infographics, visually engaging and effective PowerPoint presentations to support audit findings and for stakeholder communication.
- Experience as an Access Consultant, or related role.
- Familiarity with National Building Code Part 3 related to Accessibility and Harmonized Guidelines and Space Standards
- Ability to read and analyse architectural plans.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and technical report writing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, managing workloads effectively.
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Strong networking and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Work Conditions
- Requires travel to various sites for on-ground assessments.
- May involve inspecting construction sites or operational public facilities.
- Regular interaction with government bodies, corporate clients, and other stakeholders.
Preferred
Qualifications (Optional):
- Strong knowledge of tender processes in the public and private sectors.
- Advanced certifications in accessibility, architecture, or universal design.
- Experience working with government and corporate clients on accessibility projects.
- Proficiency in additional tools like Revit, BIM software, or GIS.
